One of the biggest advantages of studying in Europe for Indian students is that the vast majority of European universities do NOT require GRE for Masters admissions. This is a major cost and time saving compared to US universities where GRE is often mandatory. This guide lists the best European universities and programmes that do not require GRE — including many in the QS top 100.

Why European Universities Do Not Require GRE

European academic culture evaluates candidates primarily on undergraduate transcripts, relevant coursework, motivation letters, and professional experience. The GRE is largely an American standardized testing requirement that European universities generally do not use in their admissions process. This benefits Indian students who can invest time in academic preparation instead of test prep.

What Replaces GRE in European University Applications?

  • Academic transcripts: Your GPA/percentage and course grades are the primary academic filter
  • Relevant coursework: Subject-specific grades (e.g., math scores for CS programmes) matter a lot
  • Statement of Purpose / Motivation Letter: Shows your fit and motivation
  • Letters of Recommendation: Academic references carry significant weight
  • Research experience / publications: Highly valued especially at ETH Zurich, TU Munich, TU Delft
  • Work experience: Relevant industry experience can offset lower grades at some programmes

Exceptions: European Universities That MAY Require or Recommend GRE

  • INSEAD MBA (France): GMAT/GRE required for MBA programme
  • HEC Paris MBA: GMAT/GRE required
  • Some private international universities: Jacobs University, IE University may recommend GRE
  • Some research Masters: A few ETH Zurich and EPFL research positions may ask for GRE as supplementary evidence
