Study in Spain from India — The Complete 2026–27 Guide

Affordable public tuition, world-elite business schools, the highest student work allowance in mainland Europe (30 hours a week), a 12-month post-study job-search visa, and a lifestyle that is hard to beat. Here is every cost, step and deadline.

Quick Answer

Spain pairs affordability with lifestyle and a genuinely useful work rule. Public university tuition runs about €1,000–4,500 a year, Master’s often €1,000–3,500, and students can work up to 30 hours a week — the highest allowance in mainland Europe — which at Spain’s minimum wage covers a large share of living costs. Add a 12-month post-study job-search visa, world-elite business schools (IE, ESADE, IESE), and living costs of €700–1,300 a month, and a realistic all-in budget is ₹14–22 lakh a year.

The CaseWhy Indian students choose Spain

Spain has quietly become one of the smartest choices in Europe for Indian students, and it comes down to a rare combination: affordable public tuition, an outstanding lifestyle, and — crucially — the most generous student work allowance in mainland Europe. Where Germany and the Netherlands cap you at around 20 hours a week (or less), Spain lets students work up to 30 hours a week. At the Spanish minimum wage, that can cover the majority of your living costs, which fundamentally changes the affordability maths for an Indian family.

The academic offer is stronger than many realise. Spain’s public universities — Barcelona, Autonomous Madrid, Complutense, Pompeu Fabra and others — are well-ranked and inexpensive, while its private business schools are genuinely world-elite: IE Business School, ESADE and IESE rank among the very best on the planet, regularly beating famous American and British names. For business, management and finance, Spain punches far above its weight, and a growing catalogue of English-taught Master’s means you do not need fluent Spanish to start.

And then there is the life. Spain offers a quality of life — the climate, the food, the culture, the pace — that consistently makes it one of the happiest places for international students to live. A 12-month post-study job-search visa lets graduates stay to find work, and Spain’s growing tech, tourism, renewable-energy and services sectors are hiring. Spanish helps enormously for the job search and daily life, which is why we encourage students to learn it — but you can begin your Spanish journey in English and build from there.

The five things that set Spain apart

  • The highest student work allowance in mainland Europe. Students can work up to 30 hours a week — far more than Germany or the Netherlands — which at Spanish wages covers a large share of living costs.
  • Affordable public tuition. Public universities charge roughly €1,000–4,500 a year, with many Master’s at €1,000–3,500 — a fraction of the UK, US or the Netherlands.
  • World-elite business schools. IE, ESADE and IESE rank among the best business schools on earth, and Spain is a superb destination for management, finance and entrepreneurship.
  • A 12-month post-study job-search visa. Graduates can stay a year to find work, tapping into Spain’s growing tech, tourism, renewable-energy and services sectors.
  • English-taught options and a soft landing. A growing catalogue of English-taught Master’s means you can start without fluent Spanish, though learning it transforms your work and job prospects.
  • Lifestyle, climate and EU mobility. Among the happiest countries for international students, with a Schengen visa that opens the continent and a large, welcoming culture.

Money, HonestlyWhat it really costs (2026)

Spain’s appeal is affordability plus lifestyle plus a generous work rule. Tuition is modest, living costs are moderate, and 30 hours a week of legal work goes a long way. All figures verified for 2026 (≈ ₹90/€).

Cost itemAmount≈ INR
Public university tuition — Master’s (non-EU)€1,000–3,500/yr₹90,000–3.15 lakh/yr
Public university tuition — Bachelor’s (per year)€1,000–4,500/yr₹90,000–4.05 lakh/yr

Reality check: at a public university a realistic all-in figure is ₹14–22 lakh/year, lower in Valencia, Seville or Granada. Spain’s 30-hour work allowance is the game-changer — at the minimum wage it can cover most living costs once you are settled. Private business schools cost far more but deliver elite global ROI, and scholarships can offset a share.

City-by-city living costs

Where you study shapes your budget. Madrid and Barcelona have the jobs and the top schools but cost more; Valencia, Seville and Granada are far cheaper and full of student life.

What to StudyThe most in-demand courses for Indian students

Spain rewards students who target its strengths. These fields line up with its best schools, its biggest industries and the strongest job prospects.

Business, Management & MBA

This is Spain’s global calling card. IE, ESADE and IESE are among the best business schools in the world, and public universities like Pompeu Fabra and Barcelona offer strong, affordable economics and management programmes. For Indian students targeting an elite or affordable business education, Spain offers both ends of the spectrum, taught in English.

Engineering & Architecture

UPC (BarcelonaTech) and UPM (Madrid) are Spain’s leading technical universities, strong in civil, industrial, aeronautical and computer engineering, and in architecture. With affordable tuition and growing English-taught Master’s, Spain offers well-ranked technical degrees in two of Europe’s most attractive cities.

Computer Science, AI & Data Science

Barcelona and Madrid have thriving tech ecosystems — Barcelona in particular is a major European startup and tech hub — and Spanish universities offer strong, increasingly English-taught programmes in CS, AI and data. Demand and the 30-hour work rule make this a smart, practical field to study in Spain.

Tourism & Hospitality Management

As one of the world’s most-visited countries, Spain has a world-class tourism and hospitality sector and excellent programmes to match. For Indian students drawn to hotel management, tourism and events, Spain offers both strong academics and a huge, genuinely international industry to work in.

Renewable Energy & Environmental Engineering

Spain is a European leader in solar and wind energy, with a national push toward sustainability creating strong demand for engineers and scientists. Programmes in renewable energy, environmental engineering and sustainability sit in a growing, future-proof job market.

Culinary Arts & Gastronomy

Spain is a global gastronomic powerhouse — home to some of the world’s best restaurants and to the Basque Culinary Center — and offers distinctive, internationally-respected programmes in culinary arts, gastronomy and food science, leading to careers in a prestigious global industry.

Marketing, Communication & Design

Spanish schools are strong in marketing, communication, advertising and design, fields where Barcelona and Madrid’s creative industries offer real opportunity. English-taught Master’s and a vibrant creative economy make these appealing, practical choices.

Spanish Language, Culture & International Relations

As the gateway to the entire Spanish-speaking world, Spain offers unmatched programmes in Spanish language, Hispanic studies and international relations — valuable for careers spanning Europe and Latin America, a vast and growing market.

Getting InAdmission — direct applications, Spanish or English

  • Apply directly to each university or school. Spain has no single central portal for internationals; you apply to each institution. Many Master’s (and almost all business-school programmes) are English-taught, while Bachelor’s are often in Spanish.
  • Recognition of your Indian degree. Universities assess your qualifications; some programmes require a homologation or equivalence step, and business schools may require GMAT/GRE.
  • Language proof. IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programmes; Spanish (DELE, usually B1/B2) for Spanish-taught ones. Spanish is a major asset for daily life and the job search.
  • Intakes: the main intake is September/October, with some February entry. Deadlines vary by university and can be early for competitive programmes — plan a 10–12 month runway.
Where students lose a year: underestimating the degree-recognition (homologation/equivalence) step for certain programmes, and starting the visa late. Both take time and gate everything downstream. We manage both from the start.

Documents you’ll prepare: your 10th, 12th and Bachelor’s marksheets and certificates (often legalised/apostilled); a strong, programme-specific motivation letter and CV; two or three Letters of Recommendation; IELTS/TOEFL (and a Spanish certificate if relevant); a GMAT/GRE for business schools; and, for the visa, proof of funds (IPREM basis), accommodation and insurance. A sharp, specific application — especially the motivation letter and, for business schools, the essays — is one of the highest-leverage things to get right, and one we build with every student.

The VisaStudent visa, step by step

Indian students apply for a Spanish student visa (national D) for programmes over 90 days, then obtain a TIE residence card on arrival. Here is the sequence.

Step 1

Secure admission

Receive your acceptance letter from a recognised Spanish university or school.

Step 2

Prove your funds

Show financial means based on the IPREM (≈ €600/month, so about €7,200 for a one-year Master’s, more for two years), plus accommodation and health insurance.

Step 3

Apply for the student visa

Submit your national (D) student visa application at the Spanish consulate/BLS in India with your full document set.

Step 4

Travel to Spain

Once approved, travel to Spain to begin your studies.

Step 5

Get your TIE card

Within 30 days of arrival, apply for your TIE (foreigner’s identity card / residence permit) and register locally.

2026 essentials: funds based on IPREM (≈ €600/month; ~€7,200 for a 1-year Master’s) · health insurance required · apply for your TIE residence card within 30 days of arrival · visa fee ≈ €60–80.

EarningWorking while you study

This is one of Spain’s biggest advantages: students may work up to 30 hours a week — the highest allowance in mainland Europe, well above Germany’s and the Netherlands’ ~20 (or fewer) hours. At the Spanish minimum wage (about €1,221/month), that can cover a large share, sometimes most, of your living costs once you are settled. Common roles include hospitality, tourism, retail, tutoring, and internships. As across Europe, Spanish language ability markedly widens your options and pay — most customer-facing roles need conversational Spanish — which is why we encourage students to start learning it before arrival, even for an English-taught degree. Internships (prácticas) attached to many programmes are especially valuable, building Spanish experience and networks that often lead to a graduate offer. Even with the generous 30-hour rule, treat part-time work as a way to offset living costs and gain experience, not as a way to fund tuition, and protect the grades that matter most for your career.

Daily LifeWhat life as an Indian student in Spain is actually like

Accommodation

Housing is your biggest cost and is competitive in Madrid and Barcelona; smaller cities like Valencia, Seville and Granada are far cheaper and easier. Options include university residencias, shared flats (pisos compartidos, the most common and affordable) and private studios. Start your search as soon as you are admitted, and consider a shared flat for your first year — it is affordable and a fast way to build a social circle and practise Spanish.

Culture, food and getting around

Spain offers one of the best lifestyles in the world — a warm climate, extraordinary food, rich culture and a relaxed pace that international students consistently rate among the happiest. Public transport is good and student-discounted, and cities are walkable. There is a large, well-established Indian community in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations that ease the transition.

Healthcare and daily costs

International students arrange health insurance (private, or public if working), and Spain’s healthcare system is excellent. Everyday costs are moderate — lower than northern Europe, and much lower in the south — with student discounts on transport, museums and events. Eating well is famously affordable, and the menú del día lunch is a student staple.

Language and integration

You can start with an English-taught programme and much of business and tech Barcelona operates in English, but Spain is Spanish-speaking, and learning the language transforms your daily life, your 30-hour work options and — decisively — your job search after graduation. Even reaching B1 markedly widens your options. We strongly encourage students to start Spanish before departure; it is one of the highest-return things you can do for a Spanish future.

FundingScholarships that matter

MAEC-AECID Scholarships

The Spanish government’s flagship scholarship programme for international students, administered by AECID and open to Indian students. It funds Master’s, research and Spanish-language study with monthly stipends and, in some tracks, tuition and insurance. It is competitive and deadline-driven, so early preparation is essential — for Indian students seeking government funding to study in Spain, it is a primary route and one of the first we help students target.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

Prestigious, fully-funded EU Master’s programmes delivered across two or more European countries, very often including a Spanish university. They typically cover full tuition, travel and a generous monthly living allowance — among the most complete packages in Europe, and an outstanding CV line for the right profile.

Business-school scholarships (IE, ESADE, IESE)

Spain’s elite business schools offer substantial merit and diversity scholarships that can cut tens of thousands of euros off their fees for strong applicants. Because these programmes are expensive, the scholarships are a crucial part of the plan — we help strong candidates position their applications and essays to compete for them.

University & regional scholarships

Individual Spanish universities and autonomous regions run their own merit scholarships and fee reductions for international students. These are less famous and often under-applied for, which is exactly why they can be winnable — we check every award your profile qualifies for, not just the headline ones.

See our full scholarships guide for every European award and how we help you win them.

The Real PrizeAfter graduation — the job-search visa and beyond

On graduation

12-month job-search visa

Graduates of Spanish institutions can apply for a residence permit valid for up to 12 months to look for work or start a business, with the right to work during the search. It gives you a genuine year to find a role in your field rather than rushing the first offer that appears.

Once employed

Work & residence permit

Convert the job-search permit into a work residence permit once you secure a qualifying job. Spain’s growing tech, tourism, renewable-energy and services sectors are hiring, and reforms have made it easier for graduates to transition into skilled work. Spanish language ability significantly strengthens your prospects.

Longer term

EU residence

Continued employment builds toward long-term residence in Spain and the EU, with time studying and working counting toward it. Plan the whole ladder — degree, job-search visa, work permit, residence — from the start, and build your Spanish alongside it, and Spain becomes a career and a home, not just a degree.

Learn From OthersCostly mistakes we help you avoid

Mistake 01

Overlooking the 30-hour work advantage

Spain lets students work far more than most of Europe. Students who do not plan around this miss a major way to offset living costs — but it also means budgeting realistically for the periods before your Spanish is strong enough for better-paid roles.

Mistake 02

Ignoring Spanish entirely

Many Master’s are in English, but Spain is Spanish-speaking, and the language is decisive for work and the job search. Assuming you can get by only in English is a common, limiting mistake. Start Spanish early.

Mistake 03

Underestimating degree recognition

Some programmes require a homologation or equivalence step for your Indian qualifications, which takes time. Leaving it late can cost you a semester — we handle it from the start.

Mistake 04

Missing scholarship and business-school deadlines

MAEC-AECID, Erasmus Mundus and business-school scholarships have early, fixed deadlines. Miss the window and you miss the funding — we track every date.

Mistake 05

A generic application

Spanish admissions, and especially the elite business schools, read closely for fit and motivation. A recycled application or essay is a fast route to rejection from a competitive programme.

AnswersFrequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study in Spain for Indian students?
Public university tuition runs about €1,000–4,500 a year, with many Master’s at €1,000–3,500. Add living costs of €700–1,050/month in smaller cities (€1,000–1,300 in Madrid or Barcelona), and a realistic all-in figure is ₹14–22 lakh per year at a public university. Private business schools (IE, ESADE, IESE) cost far more but offer scholarships.
How many hours can I work as a student in Spain?
Up to 30 hours a week — the highest student work allowance in mainland Europe, well above Germany’s or the Netherlands’ roughly 20 hours. At the Spanish minimum wage, this can cover a large share of your living costs once you are settled, which is one of Spain’s biggest advantages for Indian students.
Do I need to know Spanish to study in Spain?
For many Master’s and almost all business-school programmes, no — they are English-taught, and IELTS/TOEFL is enough. But Spain is Spanish-speaking, and the language is decisive for part-time work and the job search. We recommend starting Spanish early, even for an English-taught degree.
Can I stay in Spain after I graduate?
Yes. Graduates can apply for a job-search residence permit valid for up to 12 months to find work or start a business, with the right to work during the search. Once you secure a qualifying job, you convert it into a work residence permit, and reforms have made this transition easier for graduates.
Which scholarships should Indian students target for Spain?
The MAEC-AECID scholarships (the Spanish government’s flagship for internationals) and Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are the most valuable public routes, alongside substantial business-school scholarships at IE, ESADE and IESE, and university and regional awards. We help identify and target the ones that fit your profile.
What are the best universities in Spain for Indian students?
For public universities: Barcelona, Autonomous Madrid, Complutense, Pompeu Fabra, and the technical universities UPC and UPM. For business, Spain has three of the world’s best schools — IE, ESADE and IESE. We match the university or school to your field, budget and career goal.
How do I apply to universities in Spain?
You apply directly to each university or school — there is no single central portal for internationals. Some programmes require a degree-recognition step, and business schools may require GMAT/GRE. Plan a 10–12 month runway, since applications, recognition and the visa stack together.
Are Spanish business schools really world-class?
Yes. IE Business School, ESADE and IESE consistently rank among the best business schools in the world, regularly beating famous American and British names in global MBA and management rankings. For Indian students targeting an elite global business career, Spain is genuinely top-tier.
Is Spain cheaper than the UK or US for Indian students?
At public universities, considerably cheaper — €1,000–4,500 a year versus £20,000–38,000 in the UK or US$40,000+ in the US, with lower living costs, especially in the south. Combined with the 30-hour work allowance and a 12-month post-study visa, a Spanish public-university degree offers strong value.
How much money do I need to show for a Spanish student visa?
Funds are based on the IPREM (about €600/month), so roughly €7,200 for a one-year Master’s and more for a two-year programme, along with accommodation and health insurance. You also apply for a TIE residence card within 30 days of arriving.
When should I apply, and what are the intakes?
The main intake is September/October, with some February entry. Because applications, any degree recognition and the visa stack together, plan for a 10–12 month runway before your intended start, and earlier for competitive business-school programmes.
How strong is the job market for Indian graduates in Spain?
Growing, especially in tech (Barcelona is a major startup hub), tourism, renewable energy and services. The 12-month job-search visa and the generous 30-hour work rule help, and Spanish language ability significantly strengthens your prospects — which is why we encourage students to learn it.
