Apply for the temporary authorisation to stay from the Luxembourg Immigration Directorate before applying for your visa.
Show sufficient financial means (broadly around €1,500/month, given the high cost of living), plus accommodation and health insurance.
Once authorised, apply for the long-stay (D) visa at the Luxembourg (or representing) consulate/VFS in India.
On arrival, register with your commune, undergo the required medical check, and collect your residence permit for study (fee €80).
All students at the University of Luxembourg — regardless of nationality — are authorised to work, up to 15 hours a week during the academic year and full-time (40 hours) during official holiday periods. Because Luxembourg has the highest wages in the EU, even 15 hours a week meaningfully offsets living costs once you are settled. However, given the country’s very high cost of living, part-time work will not cover everything, so you must arrive well-funded. Luxembourg is trilingual, and while many roles in its international finance and tech sectors operate in English, French is often the most useful language for part-time and customer-facing work, with German also valuable; we encourage students to build at least one of these. The real prize is after graduation: Luxembourg’s finance, IT, EU-institutions and space sectors pay the highest graduate salaries in Europe, and the 12-month job-search permit gives you time to access them. Treat part-time work as useful support, plan your finances for a high-cost country, and protect the grades that matter for your career.
Housing is Luxembourg’s biggest challenge and expense — rents are among the highest in Europe. The best-value option by far is a university dormitory (€350–400/month), so apply the instant you are admitted, as places are limited. Alternatives include shared flats and, for some students, living just across the border in France, Germany or Belgium where rents are lower. Budget realistically and secure housing before you arrive.
Luxembourg is a compact, safe, exceptionally international country at the crossroads of Europe, where French, German, Luxembourgish and English mingle daily. Public transport is famously free for everyone across the whole country — a genuine saving — and its central location puts Paris, Brussels and Frankfurt within easy reach. The international, multicultural environment (60% of students are from abroad) makes settling in easy, and there is a growing Indian community.
International students arrange health insurance, giving access to Luxembourg’s excellent healthcare. Everyday costs are high — groceries, eating out and especially rent — so a dormitory, cooking at home, and taking advantage of free nationwide public transport are essential habits. The upside is that wages and graduate salaries are the highest in the EU, so once you are working the maths improves sharply.
You can study in English for many Master’s, and English is widely used in Luxembourg’s international finance and tech sectors — but the country is fundamentally multilingual, and French (and to a degree German) markedly helps for daily life, part-time work and integration. We encourage students to build at least basic French; combined with Luxembourg’s international character, it makes for a rich, cosmopolitan experience.
Because public tuition is already very low, the most valuable support at the University of Luxembourg often comes through excellence scholarships for outstanding Master’s students, and — especially — funded PhD and research-assistant positions at its research centres (SnT, LCSB and others), which pay a salary.
