The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized assessment designed to evaluate an individual’s proficiency in the English language. It serves as a gateway for those aspiring to study, work, or immigrate to countries where English is the primary language of communication. Managed by three esteemed organizations—the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), the British Council IELTS, and IDP IELTS Australia—IELTS has become a cornerstone for language assessment since its inception in 1989.

IELTS Exam Types

Academic Module

The Academic Module is tailored for individuals seeking admission to English-speaking universities or institutions for higher education. This module is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to understand and use complex academic language.

General Training Module

On the other hand, the General Training Module caters to candidates aiming for employment opportunities, immigration purposes, or vocational training in English-speaking countries. 

The IELTS exam is structured to comprehensively assess four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

While the traditional pen-and-paper format has been the hallmark of IELTS, the introduction of the Computer-Based IELTS has brought about a paradigm shift. This format retains the same structure, patterns, and questions as the traditional version but offers additional benefits. Notably, results for the Computer-Based IELTS are typically available within 5 to 7 days, providing a quicker turnaround compared to the pen-and-paper format. Test-takers also benefit from the flexibility to choose test dates and times that suit their schedule.

The IELTS exam is unique in its scheduling, particularly with regard to the Speaking module. Unlike other language proficiency exams, the Speaking module is conducted on a separate day from the other three modules—Reading, Writing, and Listening. The total duration for the three modules conducted on the same day is 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Speaking module varies in duration for each candidate, ranging from 10 to 20 minutes.

Part 1 – Introduction:

The examiner introduces themselves and asks the candidate to introduce themselves and answer general questions about familiar topics, such as hobbies and daily routines.

Part 2 – Individual Long Turn:

The candidate receives a task card with a topic and points to include. They have 1 minute to prepare notes and then must speak for 1–2 minutes on the topic.

Part 3 – Discussion:

The examiner and candidate engage in a discussion related to the topic in Part 2, focusing on more abstract and complex issues.
