Non-EU tuition runs about €2,500–8,000 a year for most programmes and €12,000–16,000 for medicine, while living costs are low at €375–700 a month. Its degrees from Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs are EU-recognised and accepted by the NMC (India), GMC and USMLE. Best of all, the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship funds 200 Indian students a year, covering full tuition, a stipend, housing and insurance. A realistic all-in budget is ₹8–13 lakh a year (more for medicine, far less with the scholarship).
Hungary has become one of the most popular EU destinations for Indian students, and two things explain it. The first is medicine. Hungary’s historic medical universities — Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs — offer six-year, English-taught medical degrees (MD) with clinical training in real hospitals, and those degrees are EU-recognised and accepted by the National Medical Commission of India, the UK’s GMC and the US USMLE pathway. For the many Indian students who dream of becoming doctors but face limited, expensive private seats at home, Hungary offers a well-trodden, internationally recognised route at a fraction of the cost of Indian private medical college.
The second is the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship — one of the most generous government scholarships in the world, and India has a large, dedicated allocation of around 200 seats a year. It covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, free or subsidised dormitory housing, and medical insurance. For a medical degree that would otherwise cost €12,000–16,000 a year, the total value of a Stipendium Hungaricum award can exceed one crore rupees — genuinely life-changing, and a primary reason to plan a Hungary application carefully and early.
Beyond medicine, Hungary offers strong, affordable engineering, business, IT and sciences programmes at universities like BME and Corvinus, low living costs, EU membership and Schengen mobility, and a 9-month post-study window to seek work. Budapest is one of Europe’s most beautiful and liveable capitals, and there is a large, well-established Indian student community. Non-EU students in Hungary may work while studying on a student residence permit — up to 30 hours a week during the study period (with a cap of around 66 days) and full-time during official academic breaks (up to about 90 days a year). Hungary’s low cost of living means part-time earnings go a long way, and Budapest in particular offers opportunities in hospitality, tutoring, IT and the growing business-services sector. As across Europe, Hungarian language ability widens your options and pay for customer-facing roles, though the international and tech sectors in Budapest offer some English-language positions; we encourage students to pick up basic Hungarian for daily life. For medical students, the demanding six-year programme leaves limited time for part-time work, so plan finances (or a Stipendium Hungaricum award) accordingly. As everywhere, treat part-time work as a way to offset living costs, not to fund tuition — and, for medicine especially, protect the study time your degree demands.
Housing is very affordable, and university dormitories (kollégium) are especially cheap — often under €100–200 a month and the best-value option, particularly in Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs. Private studios and shared flats are also inexpensive. Stipendium Hungaricum students typically receive a free or heavily subsidised dormitory place. Start your search once admitted; a dormitory is worth securing early and is a fast way to build a social circle.
Hungary offers a rich culture and history, with Budapest one of Europe’s most beautiful and liveable capitals (famous for its thermal baths and architecture), at a low cost of living. Public transport is cheap and student-discounted, and Hungary’s central location makes travel across Europe easy. There is a large, well-established Indian community in Budapest, Debrecen and the medical-university cities, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations that make settling in genuinely easy.
International students arrange health insurance (Stipendium Hungaricum includes it), giving access to Hungary’s healthcare system. Everyday costs — groceries, eating out, transport — are among the lowest in the EU, which is a major part of Hungary’s appeal. Student discounts are widespread, and a dormitory plus cooking at home keeps budgets very comfortable.
You can study entirely in English — including the six-year medical degree — but Hungary is Hungarian-speaking, and while Hungarian is a famously difficult language, learning basic phrases helps for daily life, customer-facing part-time work and the job search. The large international student communities at the medical universities make English-language student life easy from day one, and we encourage students to pick up the basics of Hungarian over time.

Graduates of recognised Hungarian universities can apply for a residence permit to stay up to 9 months to seek employment or explore starting a business, with the right to work during the search. Apply no later than 15 days before your student permit expires. It gives you a genuine window to find skilled work in Hungary’s growing economy.
Convert into a work-and-residence permit once you secure a qualifying job.
