Receive your admission letter from a recognised Belgian university.
Show sufficient financial means (broadly ≈ €800/month, about €9,600/year), plus accommodation and health insurance.
Submit your long-stay (D) student visa application at the Belgian consulate/VFS in India with your full document set, including a legalised set of academic documents.
Once approved, travel to Belgium to begin your studies.
Within eight days of arrival, register at your local town hall (commune/gemeente) to obtain your residence permit card, and finalise your health insurance.
Non-EU students in Belgium may work up to 20 hours a week during term time, and full-time during the holiday periods. A favourable “student contract” tax regime applies to a set number of hours a year (around 650 hours), which keeps earnings efficient. Belgium is a high-wage economy, so part-time work in hospitality, retail, tutoring and campus roles meaningfully offsets living costs. As across Europe, though, local-language ability — Dutch in Flanders, French in Brussels and Wallonia — markedly widens your part-time options and pay, and it is decisive for the post-study job search; that is why we encourage students to start the relevant language early, even for an English-taught degree. In multilingual, international Brussels, more roles are accessible in English than elsewhere in the country. The most valuable experience is often the internship (stage) attached to many programmes, which builds Belgian experience and networks and frequently leads to a graduate offer. Treat part-time work as a way to offset living costs, not to fund tuition, and protect the grades that matter for your career.
Housing (“kot” in Flanders) is your biggest cost, and tighter in Brussels and Leuven. Options include university-affiliated student housing (apply early), private studios and shared flats. Ghent, Antwerp and Liège are more affordable and easier. Start your search the moment you are admitted, and consider a student kot for your first year — it is affordable and a fast way to build a social circle.
Belgium offers a high quality of life at the crossroads of Europe — historic cities, famous food (chocolate, beer, fries), and an excellent, student-discounted rail network that puts Paris, Amsterdam, London and Cologne within a short train ride. It is safe and international. There is a well-established Indian community in Brussels, Antwerp and Leuven, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations that ease the transition.
International students arrange health insurance (mutuelle/mutualiteit or a private policy), giving access to Belgium’s excellent healthcare. Everyday costs are moderate — lower than the Netherlands, comparable to Germany — with student discounts on transport, culture and events. Cooking at home and using student rail cards keep costs manageable.
Belgium is trilingual (Dutch, French, German), and while a growing number of Master’s and much of Brussels operate in English, learning the local language of your city — Dutch in Flanders, French in Brussels and Wallonia — transforms your daily life, your part-time work and your job search. Even reaching B1 markedly widens your options. We strongly encourage students to start early; it is one of the highest-return things you can do for a Belgian future.
The flagship award, and open to Indian students. Funded by the Flemish government, Master Mind supports outstanding international Master’s students at KU Leuven, Ghent, Antwerp, Hasselt and VUB, with a scholarship of €10,225 for 2026–27 (and often a tuition-fee waiver). It is competitive and merit-based, with an early annual deadline, so preparation matters — for Indian students seeking major funding for Flanders, it is the primary target and one of the first we help students pursue.
For French-speaking Belgium, the ARES (Académie de Recherche et d’Enseignement supérieur) scholarships fund Master’s and specialised training for students from developing countries, including India, covering tuition, travel and living costs. Graduates of Belgian universities can apply for a residence permit for a 12-month “search year” to look for skilled work or start a business, with the right to work during the search. It gives you a genuine year to find a role in your field rather than rushing the first offer.
Convert the search year into a work-and-residence permit (the Single Permit) once you secure a qualifying job. Belgium faces a skilled-labour shortage, with demand in engineering, IT, life sciences, pharma and the many international organisations and multinationals based in Brussels.
Qualifying graduates in skilled roles can move onto the EU Blue Card, and time spent studying and working counts toward long-term EU residence.
