Tuition at public universities runs about €2,000–6,000 a year for most English-taught programmes (more for medicine), while living costs are among the lowest in Europe at €350–550 a month. English-taught degrees — including the hugely popular MBBS in English — mean you do not need Polish to study. Students can work part-time, graduates can stay to seek work, and Poland’s fast-growing economy and IT sector are hiring. A realistic all-in budget is ₹8–13 lakh a year — among the lowest in the EU.
Poland has quietly become one of the smartest-value destinations in the European Union for Indian students, and the reason is simple arithmetic: it combines low tuition, some of the lowest living costs in Europe, and full EU membership. At a public university, an English-taught degree typically costs €2,000–6,000 a year, and you can live comfortably on €350–550 a month — figures that make Poland dramatically cheaper than Western Europe, let alone the UK or US, while still delivering an EU degree and Schengen mobility.
It also has real academic heritage. The Jagiellonian University in Kraków, founded in 1364, is one of the oldest universities in the world (Copernicus studied there), and Poland’s technical universities and medical schools are well-regarded across the continent. Indian students apply for a Polish national (D) student visa, then obtain a temporary residence permit for longer stays. Here is the sequence.
Receive your acceptance letter from a recognised, accredited Polish university.
Show sufficient financial means for tuition and living (broadly the cost of study plus living for the period), along with accommodation and health insurance.
Submit your national (D) student visa application at the Polish consulate/VFS in India with your full, legalised document set.
Once approved, travel to Poland to begin your studies.
For stays beyond the visa, apply for a temporary residence permit (residence card) at the local voivodeship office soon after arrival, and finalise your insurance.
Non-EU students in Poland may generally work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during holiday breaks; students at approved institutions can work without a separate work permit (from December 2025, this exemption applies to universities on an official approved list, which we check for you). Poland’s cost of living is so low that part-time work goes a long way, and its booming IT and business-services sector offers real opportunities — including internships that can convert into graduate roles. As across Europe, Polish language ability markedly widens your options and pay for customer-facing roles, though the international tech and business-services sector in Kraków, Warsaw and Wrocław offers a growing number of English-language positions. We encourage students to pick up basic Polish for daily life and the job search. Given how low living costs are, part-time work can cover a meaningful share of your expenses — but, as everywhere, treat it as support and gain rather than a way to fund tuition, and protect the grades that matter for your career.
Housing is very affordable by European standards, and student dormitories (akademik) are especially cheap — often the best-value option, and a fast way to build a social circle. Private studios and shared flats are also inexpensive, particularly outside Warsaw. Start your search once admitted; a dormitory place is worth securing early. Even in Warsaw and Kraków, rents are a fraction of Western Europe.
Poland offers a rich culture, beautiful historic cities (Kraków is a highlight), and a low cost of living that lets students enjoy an active social life on a modest budget. Public transport is cheap and student-discounted, and Poland’s central location makes travel across Europe easy and affordable. There is a growing Indian community in Warsaw, Kraków and the university cities, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations that ease the transition.
International students arrange health insurance (inexpensive), giving access to Poland’s healthcare system. Everyday costs — groceries, eating out, transport — are among the lowest in the EU, which is a large part of Poland’s appeal. The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) runs Poland’s main scholarship ecosystem for international students, including programmes that cover tuition at public universities and provide a monthly living stipend. Eligibility varies by programme and country, so we check which NAWA schemes an Indian student qualifies for and help prepare a strong, timely application — for those who qualify, it can make a Polish degree close to free.
Poland offers government and bilateral scholarships and exchange opportunities for international students through NAWA and various agreements, covering tuition and living support for eligible Master’s, PhD and research candidates.
