The catch is the cost of living, the highest in Europe at CHF 1,800–2,500 a month, and a post-study window of just 6 months. But graduate salaries are the highest on the continent, and part-time work pays CHF 22–28 an hour. A realistic all-in budget is ₹22–30 lakh a year.
Switzerland is the destination for a specific, ambitious kind of student — one aiming at the very top. ETH Zurich is consistently ranked the best university in continental Europe and among the top ten in the world, and EPFL in Lausanne is not far behind; both are global powerhouses in engineering, computer science, physics and the applied sciences. And here is the part that surprises Indian families: tuition at these world-elite public universities is roughly CHF 1,460 a year — less than many Indian private colleges. There is no other country on earth where you can study at a genuine global top-ten university for so little in fees.
That said, Switzerland demands honesty about the trade-offs, and we would rather you hear them from us first. It is the most expensive country in Europe to live in — Zurich and Geneva routinely top global cost-of-living rankings — so while tuition is trivial, your living budget is not. The post-study job-search window is short, just six months, and as a non-EU student you cannot work at all for your first six months in the country. Receive your acceptance from a recognised Swiss university — the essential first step, and the selective one.
Show substantial financial resources — around CHF 21,000/year — as Switzerland requires proof you can cover its high living costs.
Submit your national long-stay (D) visa application to the Swiss embassy/consulate in India with admission, funds, insurance and accommodation proof.
On arrival, register with the cantonal migration office within 14 days to receive your residence permit for study.
Take out the compulsory Swiss health insurance (or an approved exemption) — a required condition of your stay.
This is where Switzerland is stricter than most of Europe, and students must plan around it. As a non-EU student you cannot work at all during your first six months in the country — so you must arrive fully funded for at least your first semester. After that, you may work a maximum of 15 hours per week during term, and full-time during semester breaks. The compensation is that Swiss wages are the highest in Europe: part-time work pays roughly CHF 22–28 an hour, so even 15 hours a week can cover a large share of your living costs once you are eligible. Local-language ability (German in Zurich, French in Geneva and Lausanne) markedly widens the part-time roles open to you, though campus jobs and research assistantships are often available in English at ETH and EPFL. The bigger prize is after graduation, where Swiss graduate salaries — especially in engineering, IT, finance and pharma — are simply the highest on the continent. Plan to fund your first six months in full, and treat part-time work as something that begins in your second semester.
Housing is expensive and, in Zurich and Geneva, scarce — this is your largest cost by far. Options include limited university and student-foundation housing (apply the instant you are admitted), shared flats (WGs / colocations) and private studios. Smaller cities like Fribourg, Bern and St. Gallen are more affordable and easier. Because you cannot work for six months, secure your housing and budget before you arrive — do not assume you will sort it out on the ground.
Switzerland offers one of the highest qualities of life in the world — spectacular Alpine scenery, immaculate cities, and a public-transport network (trains, trams, buses, boats) that is the envy of Europe, with student discounts and the famous Half-Fare travelcard. It is exceptionally safe and clean. There is a well-established Indian community in Zurich, Geneva and Basel, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations that ease the transition.
Health insurance is compulsory and adds CHF 120–250 a month, and everyday costs — groceries, eating out, transport — are the highest in Europe. Cooking at home, buying a Half-Fare travelcard, and using student discounts are essential habits. The upside is that wages and, later, salaries match the cost, so once you are working the maths improves considerably.
English will get you through your studies at ETH, EPFL and most Master’s, and in international Geneva and Zurich’s tech and finance world. But Switzerland has four national languages, and learning the local one — German in Zurich and Basel, French in Geneva and Lausanne, Italian in Lugano — transforms your part-time work options, your integration and your post-study job search. We strongly encourage students to start the relevant language before arrival.
The flagship award, and India is an eligible country. Offered by the Swiss Confederation, these prestigious scholarships fund research and postgraduate study (primarily PhD, postdoctoral and research Master’s levels) with a monthly stipend, tuition support, insurance and more. They are highly competitive and deadline-driven — applications typically close in the autumn of the year before — so early, careful preparation is essential. For research-oriented Indian students, this is the single most valuable route.
ETH’s Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme funds outstanding Master’s students with a full living stipend and a tuition waiver, while the Master Scholarship Programme offers partial support. These are elite and competitive, awarded to top academic performers — exactly the kind of profile ETH admits — and they can turn an already low-fee degree into a fully funded one.
EPFL offers Master’s excellence fellowships covering a substantial living allowance for the strongest incoming students, awarded on academic merit at application. Like ETH’s, they are competitive but genuinely generous, and they reward the top tier of applicants — we help strong candidates position for them.
Individual Swiss universities, cantons and private foundations run their own scholarships and assistantship positions (including paid research and teaching assistantships at the technical universities, which are among the best-value ways to fund a Swiss degree). Graduates of Swiss universities can obtain a residence permit valid for six months to look for a job matching their qualifications, with the right to work up to 15 hours a week during the search. It is short and cannot be extended, so you should start job-hunting well before you graduate — but with Switzerland’s strong demand for skilled graduates, six focused months are often enough.
Convert to a work permit once you secure a qualifying job. Switzerland actively retains skilled graduates in engineering, IT, finance, pharma and research, and starting salaries are the highest in Europe — frequently well above CHF 80,000–100,000 a year in technical and finance roles, which quickly changes the return on your investment.
Continued skilled employment builds toward longer-term residence in Switzerland, with time on a work permit counting toward eventual settlement. Plan the whole ladder — degree, 6-month permit, work permit, residence — from the start, and treat the job search as something to begin months before graduation, not after.

Students fixate on the trivial tuition and forget that Switzerland is the most expensive country in Europe to live in. Budget CHF 1,700–2,500 a month and arrive fully funded — this is the number one mistake.
As a non-EU student you cannot work for your first six months. Students who plan to fund living costs through part-time work from day one get caught out. You must cover at least your first semester in full.
These are global top-tier, highly selective schools. A generic application is a fast rejection. The file must be excellent and specific — often with a strong GRE for technical Master’s.
