Students can work 20 hours a week, and after graduating you get a 12-month job-search permit leading to the Red-White-Red Card. Add living costs of €900–1,200 a month and one of the highest qualities of life in the world, and a realistic all-in budget is ₹12–16 lakh a year.
Austria sits, both literally and figuratively, at the heart of Europe — and it offers a combination that is hard to beat: low public tuition, genuinely good universities, and a quality of life that consistently ranks among the highest in the world (Vienna is routinely named the world’s most liveable city). For non-EU students, public university tuition is roughly €1,453 a year — less than many Indian private colleges — for a degree from institutions like the University of Vienna, founded in 1365 and the oldest in the German-speaking world, or TU Wien, one of Europe’s respected technical universities.
It is a natural alternative — or complement — to Germany. The language is the same (German), the tuition philosophy is similar (very low public fees), and the two countries share deeply integrated economies and job markets. But Austria is smaller, calmer and, many students find, more welcoming and less bureaucratic to settle into, with Vienna offering a cultural and musical richness that few cities on earth can match. For Indian students who like Germany’s model but want something a little more personal, Austria is a compelling choice.
And Austria plans for graduates to stay. A 12-month post-study job-search permit, the Red-White-Red Card route into skilled work, and an economy short of engineers, IT specialists and healthcare workers mean Austria is a career decision, not a two-year trip. Receive your letter of admission from a recognised Austrian university.
Show sufficient financial means — broadly around €7,000–11,000/year depending on age — plus accommodation and health insurance.
Submit your Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende application at the Austrian embassy/consulate in India with your full document set.
Once approved, travel to Austria to take up your studies.
Register your address (Meldezettel) within three days and collect your residence permit card; enrol and finalise your compulsory health insurance.
Non-EU students in Austria may work up to 20 hours a week during term time on a student residence permit, and full-time during the semester breaks (roughly July–September and February). Austria is a high-wage economy, so part-time work — in hospitality, retail, tutoring, campus roles and internships — can meaningfully offset living costs once you are settled. As in Germany, though, German language ability is the single biggest factor in both your part-time earnings and, far more importantly, your post-study job search: most customer-facing and better-paid roles need conversational German, which is why we push students to start learning it before they arrive, even when their degree is taught in English. The most valuable work is often the internship (Praktikum) built into or attached to your studies, which builds Austrian experience and networks and frequently leads to a graduate offer. Treat part-time work as a way to offset living costs and gain experience, not as a way to fund tuition — and protect the grades that matter most for your career.
Housing is your biggest cost, and tightest in Vienna. Options include subsidised student halls (Studentenheime, cheapest — apply early), shared flats (WGs) and private studios. Cities like Graz, Linz and Innsbruck are cheaper and easier than Vienna. Start your search as soon as you are admitted, and consider a student hall for your first year — it is affordable and a fast way to build a social circle.
Austria offers one of the highest qualities of life in the world — Vienna is regularly named the most liveable city on earth — with an extraordinary musical and cultural heritage, beautiful cities and easy access to the Alps. Public transport is excellent and student-discounted (Vienna’s annual student transit pass is famously cheap). There is a well-established Indian community in Vienna and Graz, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations that ease the transition.
Health insurance is compulsory (about €50–100 a month for students) and gives access to Austria’s excellent healthcare system. Everyday costs are moderate — lower than Switzerland, comparable to Germany — and student discounts on transport, museums and events are plentiful. Cooking at home and using a student transit pass keep costs manageable.
English will carry you through an English-taught Master’s and much of student life in Vienna, but Austria is German-speaking, and learning German transforms your daily life, your part-time work and — decisively — your job search after graduation. Even reaching B1 markedly widens your options. We strongly encourage students to start German before departure; it is one of the highest-return things you can do for an Austrian future.
The flagship scholarship for international students, administered by Austria’s OeAD, and open to Indian students. It funds Master’s, PhD and research stays with a monthly stipend, and in some tracks insurance and travel support. It is competitive and deadline-driven — applications typically close well before the academic year — so early, careful preparation matters. Austria offers a range of government and bilateral scholarships and grants for international students through the OeAD and various ministries, covering living costs and sometimes tuition for eligible Master’s and research students. Many Master’s are English-taught, but strong Bachelor’s and medical programmes are in German, and the job search needs German. Assuming everything is in English is a common, costly mistake. Start German early.
