What Changed in 2025 — New Visa Application Process

From January 1, 2025, the German Foreign Ministry replaced the old VFS Global waitlist system with a new Consular Services Portal. Indian students now book visa appointments directly through the German consulate portal instead of VFS. This has reduced waiting times significantly for most cities.

Key change: You must now register on the Consular Services Portal, fill in your application online, upload documents, and then book an appointment at the nearest German consulate (Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Bengaluru).

Step-by-Step Germany Student Visa Process for Indians

Step 1: Get Your University Admission Letter

You need a conditional or unconditional offer letter from a recognized German university before applying for a visa. Kadamb handles your entire application — we have direct tie-ups with 87+ German universities.

Step 2: Get Your APS Certificate

The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) Certificate is mandatory for all Indian applicants since 2023. The APS India office in New Delhi verifies your academic documents. Process takes 6–8 weeks. Fee: ₹18,000.

Step 3: Open a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)

Step 4: Arrange Health Insurance

Public health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) is mandatory for students in Germany. TK (Techniker Krankenkasse) and AOK are the most popular providers for international students. Cost: ~€110–120/month.

Step 5: Prepare Language Proof

For English-taught programs: IELTS 6.0–6.5, TOEFL 80+, PTE 58+, or a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate. Many German universities accept MOI for Indian students who studied in English-medium institutions.

For German-taught programs: TestDaF (minimum TDN 4), DSH-2, Goethe C1, or equivalent.

Kadamb provides free IELTS coaching via Zuriko.in — save ₹30,000–₹50,000.

Step 6: Book Visa Appointment via Consular Services Portal

Register at the German Consulate’s Consular Services Portal. Select the nearest German Consulate (Mumbai covers Gujarat, Maharashtra, MP, Rajasthan). Upload your documents and book an appointment. Current wait times: 2–6 weeks for an appointment.

Step 7: Attend Visa Interview

Bring all original documents to the consulate. The visa officer will verify your admission, financial proof (blocked account), APS certificate, and language proof. Interview is usually brief (10–20 minutes). Kadamb prepares all students thoroughly — 97% success rate.

Step 8: Collect Visa and Travel

Processing takes 15–30 working days. Your student visa allows you to enter Germany and enroll at your university. Within the first 90 days in Germany, you must register your address (Anmeldung) and apply for a Residence Permit at the local Ausländerbehörde (cost: €110, takes 8–12 weeks).
