English-taught, EU-recognised, NMC-listed medical degrees at a fraction of Indian private-college fees. Everything on NEET, NMC and NExT/FMGE, the best countries, real costs, and how to come back and practise in India — with no sugar-coating.
✍️ Reviewed by Saumitra Rajput, Founder, Kadamb Overseas · 14+ years counselling Indian students to Europe · Updated September 2026Yes — an Indian student can do MBBS in Europe in English, and the degree is valid in India, but only if you follow the rules. You must qualify NEET-UG (it is mandatory both for admission abroad and for your Indian licence), the university must be listed in the WHO/WDOMS directory and accepted by India’s National Medical Commission (NMC), the course must be a single ~6-year English-taught programme in one country, and on returning to India you must clear the FMGE screening test (being replaced by NExT) to practise. The best-value EU routes are Hungary, Poland and Lithuania — EU-recognised degrees, strong hospital training, and total 6-year costs of roughly ₹25–55 lakh, far below the ₹50 lakh–₹1.5 crore charged by Indian private medical colleges.
Every year, well over a million Indian students sit NEET, and only a small fraction win an MBBS seat. Government seats are scarce and fiercely competitive; private and deemed medical colleges routinely charge ₹50 lakh to ₹1.5 crore for the full course, and management or NRI quotas push that higher still. For a serious, capable student who qualifies NEET but misses the government cut-off, the real choice is often not “India vs abroad” — it is “an eye-watering private-college loan vs a recognised degree abroad for a third of the price.” That is the honest reason Europe is on the table.
Europe answers that maths well. Countries such as Hungary, Poland and Lithuania run six-year, English-taught medical degrees at historic public universities, with clinical training in real teaching hospitals. The degrees are EU-recognised — valid across the European Union — and the universities are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, which is what the NMC (India), the UK’s GMC and the US ECFMG/USMLE pathway require. In plain terms: study in English, train in Europe, and keep the door open to practise in India, the UK, the US or the EU. Few other regions offer that combination.
But Europe is not a shortcut, and anyone selling it as one is lying to you. You still need NEET. You still face a demanding six-year course and a licensing exam to come home to. Some agents push unaccredited universities in non-EU countries, or “packages” that quietly ignore NMC rules — and students only discover the problem years later when their degree will not register in India. This guide, and our counselling, is built around one principle: choose only NMC-compliant, EU-recognised universities, plan for the licensing exam from day one, and go in with your eyes open.

| Cost item | Amount | ≈ INR |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition — Hungary (6-yr MD) | €12,000–16,000/yr | ₹10.8–14.4 lakh/yr |
| Tuition — Poland (6-yr MD) | €10,000–15,000/yr | ₹89–13.5 lakh/yr |
| Tuition — Lithuania (6-yr MD) | €8,000–13,000/yr | ₹7.2–11.7 lakh/yr |
| Living costs (all three) | €400–700/mo | ₹3.6–6.3 lakh/yr |
| One-time set-up (visa, flights, deposit) | €1,500–3,000 | ₹1.35–2.7 lakh |
| Total 6-year cost (typical) | — | ₹25–55 lakh |
| India private/deemed MBBS (for contrast) | — | ₹50 lakh–1.5 crore |
The three EU routes we most often recommend are Hungary, Poland and Lithuania. Georgia is cheaper and very popular, but it is not in the EU — so recognition and quality vary hugely by university, and you must verify NMC/WDOMS listing before committing.
| City | Monthly living cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hungary | ₹10.8–14.4L tuition/yr | Semmelweis, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs; Stipendium Hungaricum |
| Poland | ₹89–13.5L tuition/yr | Poznan, Wroclaw, Jagiellonian; strong clinical exposure |
| Lithuania | ₹7.2–11.7L tuition/yr | LSMU (Kaunas), Vilnius; most accessible EU fees |
| Latvia | ₹8–12L tuition/yr | Rīga Stradiņš; established Indian community |
| Georgia (non-EU) | ₹5–9L tuition/yr | Popular, cheaper, but NOT EU — check NMC listing carefully |
These are established, WDOMS-listed public universities that Indian students attend and that the NMC accepts. Each badge is a monogram crest — your team can swap these for official logos where licensing allows.
Semmelweis University in Budapest is Hungary’s most prestigious medical university and one of the oldest and best in Central Europe. Its six-year, English-taught MD programme is internationally renowned, EU-recognised and NMC-accepted, with clinical training in Budapest’s major teaching hospitals. It is competitive and demanding — but for Indian students who want a top-tier, globally respected European MBBS, Semmelweis is the flagship.
The University of Debrecen runs one of Europe’s largest English-taught medical programmes and has educated international students for decades. It offers strong clinical facilities, a very large and settled Indian community, and lower living costs than Budapest. For Indian medical aspirants who want scale, support and affordability, Debrecen is among the most popular choices in Europe.
Poznan University of Medical Sciences is one of Poland’s leading medical schools and a long-standing destination for international students, with an English-taught six-year MD and strong hospital-based clinical training. Poland is prized for the depth of its clinical exposure, and Poznan’s degree is EU-recognised and NMC-accepted — a serious, well-regarded route for Indian students.
Wroclaw Medical University offers an English-taught MD with excellent clinical training and a large international cohort in one of Poland’s most liveable cities. Well-regarded for hands-on hospital experience and a structured programme, it is EU-recognised and NMC-accepted — a strong option for Indian students prioritising clinical depth.
Founded in 1364, Jagiellonian University is one of the oldest universities in the world, and its Medical College offers a prestigious English-taught MD in the beautiful city of Kraków. Academically demanding and internationally respected, it is EU-recognised and NMC-accepted — a premium, historic choice for high-performing Indian students.
LSMU in Kaunas is Lithuania’s leading health-sciences university and the country’s main destination for international medical students, with an English-taught six-year MD, modern facilities and a large teaching hospital on campus. EU-recognised and NMC-accepted, with more accessible fees than Hungary or Poland, LSMU is an excellent value route for Indian students.
Vilnius University, founded in 1579, is Lithuania’s oldest and most prestigious university, offering an English-taught MD in the capital with strong academic standards and EU recognition. NMC-accepted and set in a compact, affordable European capital, it is a distinguished option for Indian students who want a historic name at accessible cost.
Rīga Stradiņš University in Latvia is one of the Baltics’ most established medical schools for international students, with a long-running English-taught MD, a large Indian community and solid clinical training. EU-recognised and NMC-accepted, it is a dependable, well-trodden route for Indian medical aspirants in the Baltic region.
The University of Pécs, founded in 1367, was the first in the world to launch an English-taught medical programme for international students, back in 1984. Decades of experience, a welcoming southern city and low living costs make its EU-recognised, NMC-accepted MD a characterful, affordable choice for Indian students.
The Medical University of Warsaw is Poland’s largest medical university, offering an English-taught MD in the capital with extensive teaching hospitals and a strong research profile. EU-recognised and NMC-accepted, with excellent clinical exposure and city-scale opportunities, it is a top-tier Polish option for ambitious Indian students.

A European MBBS is a single, integrated ~6-year MD — not the 4.5-year-plus-separate-internship structure of India. Here is how the six years break down, so you know exactly what you are signing up for.
Foundational sciences: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, embryology. Heavy, exam-dense years that build the base. This is where students who treated Europe as “easy” get a rude shock — the workload is real and the exams are rigorous.
Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and the start of patient-facing skills. You begin connecting theory to disease and treatment, and start spending time in clinical settings.
Internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, psychiatry and more, in teaching hospitals. Real patient contact, ward work and clinical reasoning — the heart of the degree and Europe’s biggest strength.
A rotational internship year (“clinical clerkship”) across major specialties, completed in the same country, culminating in final examinations. Under NMC rules this integrated internship is part of what makes the degree compliant.
You graduate with an MD (equivalent to India’s MBBS), from an EU-recognised, WDOMS-listed university — the qualification you then take to FMGE/NExT to register in India, or to PLAB/USMLE for the UK/US.
Some countries require a separate one-year internship on return to India before full registration, depending on how the degree maps to NMC’s 54-month-course-plus-12-month-internship rule. We check this per university before you commit — it is exactly the detail cheap agents skip.
Most of these countries are in the EU/Schengen area, so you’ll apply for a national long-stay student visa (Type D) once you hold an admission letter. The process is document-heavy but predictable.
Qualify NEET, clear the university’s entrance test/interview, and receive your official Letter of Acceptance and invoice.
Pay the tuition deposit / first instalment and obtain the payment confirmation and any admission/registration documents the embassy requires.
Passport, acceptance letter, proof of funds (bank statements/loan sanction), accommodation proof, medical insurance, medical fitness certificate and academic records — all as the specific consulate specifies.
Book the visa appointment at the relevant embassy/consulate (or VFS), submit biometrics and attend any interview. Apply early — summer slots fill fast.
On approval, travel before the intake, then complete local residence-permit registration and university enrolment within the first weeks.
European student visas typically allow part-time work (often up to ~20 hours a week during term in most of these countries), which can help with living costs. Be realistic, though: a six-year medical degree is intense, and clinical years leave little spare time. Treat part-time work as pocket-money support, not a way to fund tuition — plan your finances as if you cannot work, and treat any earnings as a bonus.
Yes — if the university is listed in the WHO/WDOMS directory and the programme meets NMC’s rules. An EU-recognised degree from a WDOMS-listed university in Hungary, Poland or Lithuania is accepted by the NMC for the purpose of the licensing exam. The recognition is real, but conditional — which is why university choice is everything.
To practise in India with a foreign medical degree, you must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), conducted by the NBEMS. It is a screening test of medical knowledge; pass rates are modest, so you must prepare seriously alongside your degree — not treat it as an afterthought. Passing FMGE lets you register with the state/national medical council and practise.
The NMC is rolling out the National Exit Test (NExT) as a single, common licensing exam for both Indian and foreign medical graduates. Timelines have shifted repeatedly, but the direction is clear: future graduates will likely face NExT rather than FMGE as the universal licensing exam. Whichever applies when you graduate, plan from year one to pass it.
NMC requires a 12-month internship as part of the qualifying degree. Depending on how a specific university’s programme is structured, you may also need to complete a one-year internship in India after clearing the licensing exam. We confirm the exact requirement for each university before you enrol, so there are no surprises.
An EU-recognised MD also keeps international doors open: the UK via PLAB and GMC registration, the US via USMLE and ECFMG certification, and practice across the EU. Many Indian graduates use Europe as a launchpad, not just a route home.
A Hungarian government scholarship with a large, dedicated Indian allocation that can cover full tuition, a monthly stipend, dormitory housing and insurance — including for medical programmes. For eligible students, it can make a Hungarian MBBS effectively free, and it is the first funding route we pursue.
Rather than large scholarships, Lithuania and Poland compete on lower base tuition at strong public universities — LSMU and several Polish schools sit among the most affordable EU medical routes, which for many families beats chasing a scholarship.
Some universities offer partial tuition discounts or merit awards for high-performing applicants (strong NEET/entrance-test scores). These are limited and competitive, but worth targeting where you qualify.
Indian banks fund overseas MBBS at recognised universities; an EU-recognised, WDOMS-listed university strengthens your loan case. We help structure the financial documentation for both the loan and the visa.
See our full scholarships guide for every European award and how we help you win them.
You hold an EU-recognised MD from a WDOMS-listed university — equivalent to India’s MBBS and valid across the EU.
Sit and clear FMGE (or NExT, whichever applies at the time) to register with the Indian medical council and gain the right to practise in India.
Complete any internship in India required under NMC rules, then obtain full registration.
Sit NEET-PG (or the PG component of NExT) for an MD/MS specialisation in India — or pursue PG abroad via PLAB/USMLE routes.
Work as a licensed doctor in India, or build an international career in the UK, US, EU or the Gulf on the strength of an EU medical degree.
The four destinations Indian families most often weigh for MBBS. Georgia is included because it is hugely popular and cheaper — but note it is NOT in the EU, so recognition varies by university and must be checked case by case.

Believing an agent who says “you don’t need NEET for this country.” You do — without a valid NEET qualification your degree will never register in India. This single mistake has ended medical careers before they began.
Picking a university on price or a slick brochure without checking the WDOMS directory and NMC structure rules. If the university or programme isn’t compliant, the degree may be worthless for Indian practice.
Any agent promising a guaranteed seat, no entrance test, or a shortcut around the licensing exam is a red flag. Recognised European medicine has standards — walk away from anyone who says otherwise.
Treating Europe as an “easy” MBBS. The pre-clinical years are brutal and the licensing exam is hard. Students who coast for six years and then fail FMGE/NExT have wasted lakhs and years.
Leaving licensing-exam prep to the final year. The strongest returning graduates study for the Indian licence throughout, not after.
Not checking whether a specific university’s programme requires an extra internship in India, or how it maps to NMC’s 54+12 rule. We verify this per university — cheap agents don’t.
European medical intakes are usually in September/October, with entrance tests and visa processing through spring and summer. Start early — the biggest applications are lost to late starts, not weak profiles.
