Indian students apply for a residence permit for studies (Sweden’s equivalent of a student visa) through the Migration Agency. Here is the sequence.
Receive your acceptance from a Swedish university (usually via University Admissions).
Pay the first tuition instalment (or hold a scholarship), which the Migration Agency requires for the permit.
Show sufficient funds — about SEK 10,314/month for the study period — plus comprehensive health insurance.
Submit your residence-permit-for-studies application online to the Swedish Migration Agency, with biometrics at VFS in India.
Once granted, collect your residence permit card and travel to Sweden to begin your studies.
Sweden is unusually liberal here: there is no fixed legal limit on the number of hours an international student may work during their studies — the expectation is simply that you keep your studies on track (full-time study is treated as roughly 40 hours of work a week, so part-time employment must fit around it). In practice, students work part-time in hospitality, retail, tutoring and, increasingly, tech and research roles, and Sweden’s high wages mean the hours are worthwhile. That said, Swedish student life is demanding and the job market for casual work can be competitive, so do not assume part-time earnings will cover your costs. English is very widely spoken — Sweden consistently ranks among the most English-proficient non-native countries in the world — so the language barrier is low, though learning Swedish helps for many roles and for the post-study job search. The most valuable experience is often a thesis project or internship with a Swedish company, common in technical Master’s, which builds networks and frequently leads to a graduate offer. Treat part-time work as useful support, not a way to fund tuition, and lean on scholarships instead.
Housing is the main challenge, especially in Stockholm and other big cities where student housing is in short supply. Options include university-affiliated student housing (apply the instant you are admitted — queues are real), student-nation housing in Lund and Uppsala, and private shared flats. Smaller cities like Linköping and Umeå are far easier. Secure housing early; in Stockholm especially, it can be harder to find than a place at the university.
Sweden offers one of the highest qualities of life on earth — safe, egalitarian, design-conscious, with spectacular nature (the “right to roam”), long summer days and a strong outdoors culture. Public transport is excellent and student-discounted. English is spoken almost universally, making daily life easy. There is a well-established Indian community in Stockholm, Gothenburg and the university cities, with Indian groceries, restaurants and student associations.
International students arrange insurance (or are covered for longer programmes), with access to Sweden’s excellent healthcare. Everyday costs are high — groceries, eating out and rent — but student discounts (the Mecenat card) are widespread, and cooking at home plus a bike keep costs down. The famous Swedish “fika” (coffee break) is an affordable social ritual worth embracing.
You can study, and largely live, entirely in English — Sweden is one of the most English-proficient countries in the world — which removes the language friction Indian students fear elsewhere. Learning Swedish still helps for part-time work, deeper integration and the job search, and universities offer free or subsidised Swedish courses. We encourage students to take advantage of them.
The headline award, and India is a priority country. Funded by the Swedish government, the SISGP is a fully-funded scholarship for future leaders and change-makers, covering full tuition, a monthly living allowance, insurance and travel — one of the most generous packages in the world. It is highly competitive and leadership-focused (work experience and a clear vision matter), with an early annual deadline. For Indian students, it is the single most valuable route to Sweden, and building a strong SISGP application is our first priority for eligible candidates.
