IELTS Writing Task 2 in 2026: Complete Guide to Score Band 7+ Essays – Slug: ielts-writing-task-2-band-7-essays-2026

IELTS Writing Task 2 contributes 66% of your total Writing score, yet most Indian students score their lowest here. You have just 40 minutes to write 250+ words on an unfamiliar topic, present logical arguments, use sophisticated vocabulary, maintain grammatical accuracy, and structure a coherent essay. No pressure, right?

Here’s the harsh reality: most students fail not because they can’t write in English, but because they don’t understand what examiners actually look for. They write everything they know about a topic instead of answering the specific question. They use memorized phrases that sound unnatural. They run out of time and submit incomplete essays.

At Kadamb Overseas, we’ve analyzed hundreds of IELTS essays and identified the exact patterns that separate Band 6 writers from Band 7+ scorers. This comprehensive guide breaks down everything you need to know—from understanding the 5 essay types to using proven templates that examiners love.

Whether you’re preparing for universities in Germany, Switzerland, or Ireland, mastering Task 2 can be the difference between admission and rejection.

⚡ IELTS Writing Task 2 at a Glance

  • ⏱️ Time Allowed: 40 minutes (recommended)
  • 📝 Minimum Words: 250 words (aim for 270-300)
  • 📊 Score Weight: 66% of total Writing score
  • 🎯 Essay Types: 5 main types (Opinion, Discussion, Problem-Solution, Advantages-Disadvantages, Two-Part)
  • 📋 Scoring Criteria: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range
  • ⚠️ Penalty: Under 250 words = automatic score reduction

📊 Understanding the 4 Scoring Criteria (Band Descriptors)

Before you write a single word, understand exactly how examiners score your essay. Each criterion is worth 25%:

Criteria (25% each)Band 6 (Competent)Band 7 (Good)
Task ResponseAddresses the task, position may be unclear, some irrelevant detailsAddresses all parts, clear position throughout, well-developed ideas
Coherence & CohesionClear overall progression, some faulty cohesive devices, may lack paragraphingLogically organized, good use of cohesive devices, clear central topic in paragraphs
Lexical ResourceAdequate vocabulary, some errors in word choice/spelling, attempts less common wordsSufficient vocabulary with flexibility, some less common items, occasional errors
Grammatical RangeMix of simple and complex sentences, some errors that don’t impede communicationVariety of complex structures, frequent error-free sentences, good control

Key insight: You don’t need perfect grammar for Band 7. You need to show range (variety of structures) and accuracy (most sentences error-free).

📝 The 5 Types of IELTS Writing Task 2 Questions

Every Task 2 question falls into one of these 5 categories. Recognizing the type immediately tells you the structure to use:

Essay TypeKey Phrases in QuestionWhat You Must Do
1. Opinion (Agree/Disagree)“To what extent do you agree or disagree?”Give YOUR opinion + support with reasons/examples
2. Discussion“Discuss both views and give your opinion”Present BOTH sides + state which you support
3. Problem-Solution“What are the causes? What solutions can you suggest?”Identify problems/causes + propose solutions
4. Advantages-Disadvantages“What are the advantages and disadvantages?”Present both + may need to give opinion
5. Two-Part QuestionTwo distinct questions in promptAnswer BOTH questions equally

🏗️ The 4-Paragraph Essay Structure (Works for ALL Types)

This universal structure works for every essay type and is what examiners expect:

Paragraph 1: Introduction (40-50 words)

  • Sentence 1: Paraphrase the question (show vocabulary range)
  • Sentence 2: State your thesis/position clearly

Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph 1 (90-100 words)

  • Sentence 1: Topic sentence (main idea)
  • Sentences 2-3: Explanation/reasoning
  • Sentence 4: Specific example
  • Sentence 5: Concluding thought (optional)

Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph 2 (90-100 words)

  • Same structure as Body 1
  • Different point/perspective

Paragraph 4: Conclusion (30-40 words)

  • Sentence 1: Summarize main points
  • Sentence 2: Restate position/final thought

💡 EXPERT TIP

“The #1 mistake I see? Students waste precious time writing elaborate introductions. Your introduction should be 2-3 sentences MAX. Examiners don’t give extra marks for long introductions—they want to see your ideas in the body paragraphs. Spend 5 minutes planning, 30 minutes writing body paragraphs, and 5 minutes on intro/conclusion.”

✍️ Essay Template #1: Opinion Essay (Agree/Disagree)

Question: “Some people believe that universities should only offer courses that prepare students for employment. To what extent do you agree or disagree?”

Template Structure:

INTRODUCTION:

[Paraphrase] It is argued that higher education institutions should focus exclusively on vocational training. [Thesis] I strongly disagree with this view, as universities serve a broader purpose than mere job preparation.

BODY 1 (First reason + example):

[Topic sentence] Firstly, limiting university curricula to employment-focused courses would stifle critical thinking and creativity. [Explanation] Many of humanity’s greatest innovations have emerged from theoretical research without immediate commercial application. [Example] For instance, the internet was originally developed by academic researchers with no profit motive, yet it has transformed the global economy. [Concluding thought] Restricting education to vocational training would prevent such groundbreaking discoveries.

BODY 2 (Second reason + example):

[Topic sentence] Furthermore, a well-rounded education produces more adaptable professionals. [Explanation] In today’s rapidly changing job market, specific technical skills can become obsolete within years. [Example] Studies from Harvard Business Review indicate that employers increasingly value soft skills like communication and problem-solving over narrow technical expertise. [Concluding thought] Therefore, a broader educational approach better prepares graduates for long-term career success.

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, while employability is important, universities should maintain diverse curricula that foster innovation and adaptability. Reducing higher education to job training would ultimately harm both individuals and society.

✍️ Essay Template #2: Discussion Essay

Question: “Some people think children should start formal education at a very early age. Others believe children should not start school until they are older. Discuss both views and give your opinion.”

Structure for Discussion Essays:

  • Introduction: Paraphrase + mention both views + state your position
  • Body 1: View you DISAGREE with (still present fairly!)
  • Body 2: View you AGREE with (your main argument)
  • Conclusion: Summarize + reaffirm your position

⚠️ Common Mistake: Many students present both views but forget to give their own opinion. This LIMITS your Task Response score. Always clearly state which view you support!

✍️ Essay Template #3: Problem-Solution Essay

Question: “Many cities face serious traffic congestion. What are the causes of this problem? What solutions can you suggest?”

Structure:

  • Introduction: Paraphrase + thesis (this essay will discuss causes and solutions)
  • Body 1: 2-3 causes with explanations
  • Body 2: 2-3 solutions with explanations
  • Conclusion: Summarize + final recommendation

Useful Phrases for Problem-Solution:

For Causes:

  • “One of the primary causes of this issue is…”
  • “This problem stems from…”
  • “A significant contributing factor is…”

For Solutions:

  • “A viable solution to this would be…”
  • “This problem could be mitigated by…”
  • “One effective approach would be to…”

❌ 10 Common Mistakes That Kill Your Score

  1. Not answering the question — Writing about the topic but not addressing what’s asked
  2. Under word count — Writing less than 250 words = automatic penalty
  3. No clear position — Being vague about your opinion in opinion essays
  4. Memorized phrases — Using templates that don’t fit the question
  5. One-sided discussion — Not presenting both views in discussion essays
  6. No examples — Making claims without supporting evidence
  7. Poor paragraphing — Writing one long paragraph or too many short ones
  8. Repetitive vocabulary — Using “good” and “bad” repeatedly
  9. Run-on sentences — Sentences with 3+ clauses that lose clarity
  10. No proofreading — Submitting with obvious spelling/grammar errors

✅ Final Checklist Before Submitting

Use this checklist in your final 5 minutes:

  • ☐ Word count is 250+ (ideally 270-300)
  • ☐ All parts of the question are addressed
  • ☐ My position is clear throughout
  • ☐ Each body paragraph has ONE main idea
  • ☐ I’ve included specific examples
  • ☐ Cohesive devices connect my ideas
  • ☐ Variety of sentence structures used
  • ☐ Spelling checked (especially common words)
  • ☐ Subject-verb agreement correct
  • ☐ Conclusion summarizes (doesn’t introduce new ideas)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The minimum is 250 words, but aim for 270-300 words. Writing significantly more (350+) can lead to more errors and time pressure. Under 250 words results in automatic score reduction. Word count is calculated manually by examiners, so don’t waste time counting—practice enough that you can estimate accurately.

Yes! In fact, you SHOULD use “I” in opinion essays when asked “To what extent do you agree?” Using “I believe,” “In my opinion,” or “I strongly agree” is appropriate and expected. Avoid using “I think” repeatedly—vary with “I believe,” “I am convinced that,” “From my perspective.” Just don’t make it overly personal with “I feel” for every point.

Most experts recommend writing Task 2 first because it’s worth 66% of your Writing score. If you run out of time, it’s better to have an incomplete Task 1 (150 words) than an incomplete Task 2. Spend 40 minutes on Task 2, then 20 minutes on Task 1. However, if you struggle with Task 2, doing Task 1 first can build confidence.

No. Task 2 requires a formal essay format with complete sentences and paragraphs. Bullet points are not allowed and will negatively affect your Coherence and Cohesion score. Always write in continuous prose with clear paragraph breaks between introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Focus on three areas: (1) Task Response — Ensure you answer ALL parts of the question with fully developed ideas. (2) Coherence — Each paragraph should have ONE clear central topic with logical flow. (3) Vocabulary — Replace basic words with Band 7 alternatives and use topic-specific vocabulary. Get feedback on your essays from a qualified IELTS coach to identify your specific weaknesses.

IELTS topics are designed to be accessible to everyone—you don’t need specialist knowledge. The examiner assesses your English ability, not your expertise on the topic. Use general knowledge, logical reasoning, and hypothetical examples. Phrases like “Research suggests that…” or “Studies have shown…” can introduce general examples without requiring specific facts.

Requirements vary: Germany: Overall 6.0-6.5, with some accepting 5.5 in individual components. Switzerland: ETH Zurich requires 7.0 overall; other universities 6.0-6.5. Ireland: 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in Writing specifically. France: 6.0-6.5. Some programs, especially MBA/research, require higher Writing scores. Check specific requirements at our country guides.
