Uni-Assist is a centralized application processing portal used by approximately 170 German universities to evaluate international student credentials, while direct application means you apply straight to the university’s own admissions office without any intermediary. Here is the critical distinction that confuses most Indian students: Uni-Assist does not make admission decisions. It only verifies whether your Indian qualifications (10th, 12th, bachelor’s degree) meet German academic standards, and then forwards a pre-assessment document called VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) to the university. The university then makes the actual admission decision. With direct application universities like TU Munich, TU Dresden, and most private universities, you submit everything directly to the university, which handles both credential verification and admission in-house. The choice between these two systems is not yours to make—each university decides which system it uses. Your job is to identify which system your target university requires and plan your timeline accordingly, because Uni-Assist adds 4-6 weeks to the process. Over the past 14 years at Kadamb Overseas, we have guided 500+ Indian students through both systems, and the number one reason students miss deadlines is not knowing that Uni-Assist requires earlier preparation. This guide gives you the complete picture: which universities use which system, exactly how each process works, what it costs in INR, and how to plan your timeline for the September 2026 intake.

Expert Insight

“The single biggest mistake I see Indian students make is discovering Uni-Assist exists only two weeks before the university deadline. Uni-Assist adds 4-6 weeks to your application timeline—and during peak season between April and July, it can take even longer. Every year, at least 15-20% of students who come to us in a panic have missed their target university’s deadline because they did not account for Uni-Assist processing time. The moment you decide to study in Germany, the very first thing you should do is check whether your target universities use Uni-Assist or accept direct applications. This single piece of information determines your entire application timeline.”

Key Takeaways: What Every Indian Student Must Know

  1. Approximately 170 German universities use Uni-Assist for international credential evaluation, while roughly 70 universities accept direct applications—always check your specific university’s requirement before planning your timeline.
  2. Uni-Assist costs €75 (~₹7,000) for the first application and €30 (~₹2,800) for each additional university, making it more expensive than most direct application portals.
  3. Uni-Assist adds 4-6 weeks to your application processing time—for September 2026 intake, you should submit to Uni-Assist by mid-April at the latest.
  4. VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is the pre-assessment document that Uni-Assist issues after verifying your credentials—some direct universities also accept VPD as an alternative to their own evaluation.
  5. TU Munich, TU Dresden, and University of Stuttgart accept direct applications through their own portals, while RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, and University of Freiburg require Uni-Assist.
  6. You cannot choose which system to use—the university decides, and some universities use Uni-Assist for bachelor’s but direct for master’s or vice versa.
  7. Always check the specific program page on the university website and on the DAAD database to confirm whether Uni-Assist or direct application is required for your exact program and degree level.

Understanding Uni-Assist: What It Is and Why It Exists

Uni-Assist (Arbeits- und Servicestelle für internationale Studienbewerbungen) is a centralized organization based in Berlin that evaluates foreign academic credentials for German universities. It was established because German universities needed a standardized way to assess whether international qualifications—from over 180 countries with different grading systems—meet German academic entry requirements.

For Indian students specifically, Uni-Assist performs these critical functions:

  • Credential Verification: Checks whether your 10th, 12th, and bachelor’s degree from Indian boards (CBSE, ICSE, state boards) and universities are recognized in Germany.
  • Grade Conversion: Converts your Indian percentage or CGPA into the German grading scale (1.0 to 5.0, where 1.0 is the best).
  • Document Authentication: Verifies that your documents are genuine and meet German standards.
  • Eligibility Assessment: Determines whether you are eligible for your chosen program based on your academic background and subject prerequisites.
  • VPD Issuance: If everything checks out, Uni-Assist issues a Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD)—a pre-assessment document that confirms your eligibility—and forwards it to your target university.

Critical point: Uni-Assist does NOT make admission decisions. It only evaluates whether your credentials meet the minimum requirements. The university itself decides whether to admit you based on your VPD, your grades, your motivation letter, language proficiency, and all other application materials.

Direct Application: How It Works

With direct application universities, the entire process is handled in-house by the university’s international admissions office. You submit all your documents—academic transcripts, degree certificates, language certificates, motivation letter, CV—directly through the university’s own online portal. The university’s admissions team evaluates your credentials, verifies documents, converts grades, and makes the admission decision all within their own system.

Direct application universities typically have:

  • Their own online application portals (like TUMonline for TU Munich, SELMA for TU Dresden)
  • Faster processing times since there is no intermediary
  • Sometimes lower or no application fees
  • More direct communication with the admissions office
  • Their own internal grade conversion formulas

Important Warning: Some universities use a hybrid system. For example, LMU Munich uses direct application for some master’s programs but Uni-Assist for others. FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg similarly has a mix. Never assume based on the university name alone. Always check the specific program’s admissions page on the university website. The DAAD database (daad.de/en) also shows application method for each program.

How to Check Whether Your University Uses Uni-Assist or Direct Application

Before you start preparing documents or worrying about timelines, follow this exact process to determine your application route:

Step 1: Go to the University’s Official Website

Navigate to the specific master’s or bachelor’s program page. Look for sections titled “Admissions,” “How to Apply,” “Application Process,” or “International Applicants.” Most German universities have a dedicated page for international applications.

Step 2: Look for Application Portal Information

The program page will typically state one of the following: “Apply via Uni-Assist,” “Apply through our online portal,” “International applicants apply via uni-assist.de,” or “Direct application through [portal name].” This is your definitive answer.

Step 3: Cross-Check on the DAAD Database

Visit the DAAD International Programmes database (daad.de/en/study-and-research-in-germany/courses-of-study-in-germany/). Search for your specific program. Each listing shows the application method, including whether Uni-Assist is required.

Step 4: Check the Uni-Assist Member List

Visit uni-assist.de/en/tools/uni-assist-universities/ for the complete list of Uni-Assist member universities. If your university is on this list, there is a high probability (but not certainty) that you need to apply through Uni-Assist. Confirm on the program page.

Step 5: Contact the International Office (If Still Unsure)

If the website information is unclear, email the university’s International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) directly. State your nationality (Indian), your degree level (bachelor’s/master’s), and the specific program name. They will confirm the application route.

For a complete checklist of documents you will need regardless of the application route, refer to our detailed guide on documents required for German university applications in 2026.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Through Uni-Assist (Complete Process for Indian Students)

Here is the exact process, broken down into actionable steps. We walk every Kadamb Overseas student through this process, and these steps reflect the reality of what Indian students actually encounter:

Phase 1: Account Creation and Program Selection

Step 1: Create Your Uni-Assist Account
Go to my.uni-assist.de and register with your email address. Use a professional email that you check regularly. You will receive a verification email—click the link to activate your account. This takes 5-10 minutes.

Step 2: Complete Your Personal Profile
Fill in your personal information: full name (as on passport), date of birth, nationality (Indian), passport number, contact details. Your name must match your passport exactly—do not use nicknames or abbreviated names. This section also asks about your educational background at a high level.

Step 3: Select University and Program
Click “New Application” and search for your target university and specific program. You can add multiple universities and programs. Each university-program combination counts as one application. Remember: the first costs €75, each additional costs €30.

Phase 2: Document Upload

Step 4: Upload Academic Documents
Uni-Assist requires the following from Indian students (upload as PDF, max 4MB per file, in colour scans):

  • 10th standard marksheet and certificate (CBSE/ICSE/State Board)
  • 12th standard marksheet and certificate
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate (or provisional certificate if final year)
  • All semester marksheets / transcripts from your bachelor’s degree
  • Degree certificate from your university
  • Passport copy (photo and information page)
  • Language proficiency certificate (IELTS/TOEFL for English programs, TestDaF/DSH for German programs)
  • Motivation letter (if required by the specific program)
  • CV / Resume (if required)
  • APS certificate (if applicable—more on this below)

Step 5: Fill in the Application Form
For each university-program combination, you will fill in a specific application form. This includes details about your educational background, course modules studied, language skills, and sometimes a motivation statement. Some universities have additional questions specific to their program.

Phase 3: Payment and Hard Copy Submission

Step 6: Pay the Application Fee
Payment is made online via the Uni-Assist portal. Accepted methods include credit card (Visa/Mastercard), bank transfer (SEPA), and PayPal. For Indian students, credit card is the fastest option. The fee structure as of 2025-26:

  • First application: €75 (~₹7,000)
  • Each additional application: €30 (~₹2,800)
  • VPD-only application: €75 (~₹7,000)

Step 7: Mail Hard Copies to Berlin
This is the step that catches many Indian students by surprise. After completing the online application, you MUST mail certified hard copies of all documents to Uni-Assist’s office in Berlin. The mailing address is provided in your application portal. Use a reliable international courier service (DHL Express, FedEx, or Aramex). Cost from India: ₹2,000-3,500. Delivery time: 5-7 business days.

Important: Uni-Assist will not begin processing your application until both the online submission AND the hard copies are received. The processing clock starts only when hard copies arrive.

Phase 4: Processing and VPD

Step 8: Wait for Processing (4-8 Weeks)
Once Uni-Assist receives your hard copies, processing begins. You can track the status in your my.uni-assist.de portal. Status stages: “Documents Received” → “In Review” → “Completed.” During this time, Uni-Assist may contact you via email if any documents are missing or unclear.

Step 9: Receive Your VPD
If your credentials are verified successfully, Uni-Assist issues a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) and forwards it directly to the university. You can also download a copy from your portal. The VPD contains your converted German grade and a statement of eligibility.

Step 10: University Makes Admission Decision
After receiving your VPD, the university evaluates your complete application (including motivation letter, CV, language scores, and all other materials) and makes the final admission decision. This typically takes an additional 2-6 weeks.

Expert Insight

“When I counsel Indian students about the Uni-Assist process, I always emphasize one thing: plan your document preparation as if the deadline is 8 weeks earlier than it actually is. If a university’s deadline is July 15, treat May 15 as YOUR deadline for submitting to Uni-Assist. This accounts for processing time, potential document queries, courier delays, and the reality that Uni-Assist gets overwhelmed during peak season. I have seen students who submitted everything perfectly but three weeks late because they did not account for the hard copy mailing requirement. Germany runs on precision—your application process should too.”

— Saumitra Rajput, Founder, Kadamb Overseas (14+ years experience, 500+ students placed in German and European universities)

What Is VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) and Do You Need It?

VPD stands for Vorprüfungsdokumentation, which translates to “preliminary assessment documentation.” It is the official document that Uni-Assist issues after evaluating your international credentials. Think of it as a certificate that says: “We have checked this Indian student’s qualifications, and they meet the academic requirements for studying in Germany.”

What a VPD contains:

  • Your converted German grade: Your Indian percentage or CGPA converted to the German 1.0-5.0 scale using the modified Bavarian formula
  • Eligibility statement: Confirmation that your academic background qualifies you for the specific type of program (bachelor’s, master’s) in Germany
  • Subject match assessment: Whether your previous studies align with the subject requirements of your chosen program
  • Any conditions: If your eligibility is conditional (e.g., pending final semester results), this will be noted

When you need a VPD:

  • Uni-Assist universities: A VPD is automatically generated and sent to the university as part of the standard Uni-Assist application. You do not need to request it separately.
  • Direct application universities that accept VPD: Some direct-application universities accept a VPD as an alternative to their own credential evaluation. For example, TU Munich accepts VPD but does not require it—they can also evaluate your documents internally. Having a VPD can sometimes speed up the process at direct universities.
  • VPD-only application: You can also apply to Uni-Assist for a VPD only (without applying to a specific university). This costs €75 and is useful if you want to get your credentials evaluated first and then decide which universities to apply to. The VPD is typically valid for one academic year.

Pro Tip from Kadamb Overseas: If you are applying to a mix of Uni-Assist and direct-application universities, consider getting a VPD first through the VPD-only application. This gives you a verified German grade that you can use across all your applications, making your direct applications stronger and faster to process.

German Grade Conversion: How Your Indian Marks Translate

Understanding how your Indian percentage converts to the German grading scale is essential because it determines which programs you qualify for. Uni-Assist uses the modified Bavarian formula for Indian students:

German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Maximum Grade – Obtained Grade) / (Maximum Grade – Minimum Passing Grade)

For Indian universities: Maximum = 100, Minimum Passing = 50 (may vary by university)

Indian PercentageApproximate German GradeGerman Classification
90-100%1.0 – 1.6Sehr gut (Very Good)
80-89%1.6 – 2.2Gut (Good)
70-79%2.2 – 2.8Befriedigend (Satisfactory)
60-69%2.8 – 3.4Ausreichend (Sufficient)
50-59%3.4 – 4.0Ausreichend (Barely Sufficient)

Note: This is an approximation. Actual conversion depends on your specific university’s grading system, the maximum marks achievable, and the minimum passing marks. Uni-Assist may adjust the formula based on your institution. CGPA-based systems are converted differently.

If you have lower marks and are worried about eligibility, read our detailed guide on getting admission to European universities with 50-60% marks as an Indian student in 2026.

10 Common Mistakes Indian Students Make with Uni-Assist

Based on our experience with over 500 applications at Kadamb Overseas, these are the mistakes we see most frequently. Avoid every single one of them:

1. Not Accounting for Processing Time: This is the number one mistake. Students discover Uni-Assist 2-3 weeks before the university deadline and panic. Uni-Assist needs 4-8 weeks minimum. If you submit to Uni-Assist on July 1 for a July 15 university deadline, your application will not be processed in time.

2. Forgetting to Mail Hard Copies: Many students complete the online application and think they are done. They are not. Uni-Assist requires certified hard copies mailed to Berlin. Your application is not considered “received” until the hard copies arrive. Factor in 5-7 business days for international courier from India.

3. Uploading Uncertified Documents: Uni-Assist requires certified or notarized copies of all academic documents. Simply scanning your original marksheets is not sufficient. Get them notarized by a notary public or certified by your university’s registrar before scanning and uploading.

4. Name Mismatches Between Documents: If your 10th certificate says “Rajesh Kumar” but your passport says “Rajesh Kumar Singh,” Uni-Assist may flag this as a discrepancy. Ensure all documents have consistent names, or provide a name change affidavit or gazette notification if applicable.

5. Not Checking Program-Level Requirements: As mentioned earlier, the same university may use Uni-Assist for some programs and direct application for others. Students who check at the university level instead of the program level sometimes apply through the wrong channel entirely.

6. Sending Incomplete Transcripts: For Indian bachelor’s degrees, you need ALL semester marksheets, not just the final consolidated marksheet. If you are in your final year and semester 8 results are not out yet, submit semesters 1-7 and mention that the final semester is pending. Also include a letter from your college confirming expected completion date.

7. Ignoring the 10th and 12th Marksheet Requirement: Indian students often ask “Why does a German university need my 10th class marksheet?” The answer is that Uni-Assist evaluates your entire academic trajectory, not just your bachelor’s degree. Missing 10th or 12th marksheets will delay your application.

8. Applying for Wrong Semester: German universities have winter semester (October start, deadlines around July 15) and summer semester (April start, deadlines around January 15). Some programs only admit in winter semester. Make sure you select the correct semester in your Uni-Assist application.

9. Not Responding to Queries Promptly: If Uni-Assist emails you asking for a missing document or clarification, respond within 3-5 days. Delayed responses push back your entire processing timeline. Check your email (including spam folder) daily during the processing period.

10. Assuming Uni-Assist Rejection = University Rejection: If Uni-Assist finds that your credentials do not meet the minimum requirements for your chosen program, they will inform you. This is not a university rejection—it means your academic profile does not meet the baseline German standards for that specific program. You may still be eligible for other programs or universities with different requirements.

Tips to Speed Up the Uni-Assist Process

While you cannot control Uni-Assist’s internal processing speed, you can eliminate delays on your end:

  • Submit early in the cycle (February-March): Uni-Assist receives the bulk of applications between April and July. Submitting in February or March means your application enters a shorter queue.
  • Ensure document completeness before submitting: The number one cause of processing delays is missing documents. Use the Uni-Assist document checklist for your specific program and double-check everything before submitting.
  • Send hard copies on the same day as online submission: Do not wait. As soon as you complete the online application, courier the hard copies. Every day of delay adds a day to your total processing time.
  • Use DHL Express or FedEx Priority: Standard postal mail from India to Germany can take 2-4 weeks. Express courier takes 5-7 business days. The extra ₹1,000-1,500 is worth the time saved.
  • Get documents notarized in advance: Do not wait until application time to notarize documents. Get certified copies ready in January or February. Keep multiple certified copies so you are always prepared.
  • Pay the fee immediately: Some students delay payment, which delays the “complete application” status. Pay as soon as you submit online.
  • Monitor your email daily: Set up alerts for emails from uni-assist.de domain. Respond to any queries within 24-48 hours.
  • Consider VPD-only first: If you are unsure about your university choices, get a VPD-only evaluation done early. This takes 4-6 weeks. Once you have the VPD, you can apply to specific universities with your credentials already verified.

Expert Insight

“Indian students who apply through Kadamb Overseas never face Uni-Assist delays, because we build the Uni-Assist timeline into our application strategy from day one. Our system is simple: if a university deadline is July 15, we submit the Uni-Assist application by April 15. We prepare all documents, get them notarized, courier hard copies, and pay fees within a single week. The students who come to us after trying to handle Uni-Assist alone almost always have the same story: ‘I did not know I needed to send hard copies’ or ‘I did not know it takes 6 weeks.’ The system is not difficult—it just requires planning and awareness of the timeline. That awareness is what a good counsellor provides.”

— Saumitra Rajput, Founder, Kadamb Overseas (14+ years experience, 500+ students placed in German and European universities, 97% visa success rate)

APS Certificate: Do Indian Students Need It?

The APS (Akademische Prüfungsstelle) certificate is an additional credential verification required by some German universities specifically from applicants from certain countries. Here is the current situation for Indian students:

Good news for Indian students: As of 2025-26, Indian students are generally NOT required to obtain an APS certificate. The APS certificate is primarily required for Chinese and Vietnamese applicants. However, a small number of German universities may request it from Indian students as well. Always check your specific university’s requirements. If APS is required, the process involves submitting documents to the German Embassy in New Delhi for verification, which takes an additional 4-8 weeks and costs approximately ₹10,000-15,000.

Uni-Assist vs Direct Application: Which Is Better for You?

You do not get to choose the application system—the university decides. However, when selecting which universities to apply to, understanding the trade-offs can help you build a smarter application strategy:

Choose Uni-Assist Universities If:

  • You are applying to 3+ universities that are all Uni-Assist members (you only prepare one set of hard copies)
  • You want a standardized grade conversion that is consistent across universities
  • You are applying early (February-March) and have ample time
  • Your target programs at top universities like RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, or Humboldt are only available via Uni-Assist
  • You want a VPD that you can potentially reuse at multiple universities

Prioritize Direct Application Universities If:

  • You are starting late and need faster processing
  • You want to save on application fees
  • You prefer direct communication with admissions offices
  • Your top choices (TU Munich, KIT, TU Dresden, University of Stuttgart) accept direct applications
  • You want to avoid the hard copy mailing requirement

The ideal strategy for most Indian students: Apply to a mix of 2-3 Uni-Assist universities and 2-3 direct application universities. This gives you diversification across both systems. Start the Uni-Assist applications first (because of the longer timeline), and submit direct applications in parallel.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Uni-Assist and why do I need it?

Uni-Assist is a centralized credential evaluation service used by approximately 170 German universities to assess whether international students’ qualifications meet German academic standards.

You need Uni-Assist because German universities require a standardized way to evaluate foreign credentials. As an Indian student, your CBSE/ICSE/State Board certificates and your bachelor’s degree from an Indian university need to be evaluated against German academic standards. Uni-Assist performs this evaluation by converting your grades to the German scale, verifying your documents’ authenticity, and issuing a VPD that confirms your eligibility. Without this evaluation, the approximately 170 Uni-Assist member universities cannot process your application. Think of Uni-Assist as a translator between the Indian and German education systems—it does not decide whether you get admitted, but it tells the university whether your background meets the minimum requirements. If your target university is a Uni-Assist member, you cannot bypass the system. The requirement is determined by the university, not by you.

2. How much does Uni-Assist cost for Indian students?

Uni-Assist costs €75 (~₹7,000) for your first application and €30 (~₹2,800) for each additional university application, plus courier costs of ₹2,500-3,500 for sending hard copies to Berlin.

The fee structure is designed so that applying to multiple Uni-Assist universities is relatively affordable after the initial cost. For example, if you apply to 4 Uni-Assist universities, the total Uni-Assist fee is €75 + (3 × €30) = €165, which is approximately ₹15,400. On top of this, you need to budget for international courier costs to send certified hard copies of your documents to Uni-Assist’s Berlin office (₹2,500-3,500 via DHL Express or FedEx), document notarization costs (₹1,500-3,000), and any forex charges on your credit card (2-3.5% markup). A VPD-only application (without applying to a specific university) also costs €75. Compared to application fees in the US (which can be $75-100 per university, totalling $300-500 for 4-5 universities), the Uni-Assist cost structure is actually quite reasonable, especially for multiple applications.

3. How long does Uni-Assist take to process applications?

Uni-Assist typically takes 4-8 weeks to process applications, but during peak season (April to July), processing can extend to 6-10 weeks or longer.

The processing time depends on several factors: when you apply (early applicants face shorter queues), whether your documents are complete and properly certified (incomplete applications face additional delays), and the overall volume of applications Uni-Assist is handling at that time. The processing clock starts only when Uni-Assist receives your hard copies in Berlin—not when you complete the online submission. So if you submit online on April 1 and your hard copies arrive on April 8, processing begins from April 8. Add 5-7 business days for courier delivery from India to Berlin. After Uni-Assist issues your VPD, the university itself takes an additional 2-6 weeks to make an admission decision. This means the total time from your initial submission to receiving an admission decision via Uni-Assist can be 8-16 weeks. For the September 2026 intake, we at Kadamb Overseas recommend submitting your complete Uni-Assist application (online plus hard copies) no later than mid-April 2026.

4. Can I apply directly to TU Munich or do I need Uni-Assist?

TU Munich accepts direct applications through its own TUMonline portal—you do NOT need Uni-Assist to apply to TU Munich for most programs.

TU Munich is one of the most prestigious German universities (QS #37 globally) and it manages its own application process internally. You create an account on the TUMonline portal (campus.tum.de), upload your documents directly, and the university’s admissions team handles credential evaluation, grade conversion, and the admission decision in-house. This means faster processing times compared to Uni-Assist universities. However, TU Munich has its own strict requirements and its own grade conversion formula, which may differ slightly from Uni-Assist’s Bavarian formula. Similarly, other top direct-application universities include TU Dresden (SELMA portal), KIT Karlsruhe, and University of Stuttgart (C@MPUS portal). Note that while TU Munich is direct for most programs, it is always wise to check the specific program page, as exceptions can exist. Also, TU Munich accepts VPD if you already have one, which can sometimes speed up their internal review.

5. What documents does Uni-Assist require from Indian students?

Uni-Assist requires certified copies of your 10th marksheet, 12th marksheet, all bachelor’s semester marksheets, degree certificate, passport copy, and language proficiency certificates—both uploaded digitally and mailed as hard copies to Berlin.

The complete document list for Indian students applying through Uni-Assist includes: (1) 10th standard marksheet and certificate from CBSE/ICSE/State Board, (2) 12th standard marksheet and certificate, (3) all individual semester marksheets from your bachelor’s degree (not just the consolidated marksheet), (4) bachelor’s degree certificate or provisional certificate if you have not yet graduated, (5) course completion certificate or expected completion date from your college if in final year, (6) passport copy (information page with photo), (7) language proficiency certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, or TestDaF/DSH depending on program language), (8) CV or resume if required by the specific program, and (9) motivation letter if required. All documents must be notarized or certified by your university registrar. Some programs may also require work experience certificates, portfolios, or recommendation letters. For a comprehensive list with preparation tips, see our complete document checklist for German university applications in 2026.

6. What is VPD and do I need it?

VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is a pre-assessment document issued by Uni-Assist that confirms your international credentials meet German academic standards—you need it if applying through Uni-Assist, and it can also be helpful for some direct-application universities.

The VPD contains your converted German grade, a statement of eligibility for studying in Germany, and an assessment of whether your prior studies match the subject requirements of your chosen program. If you are applying through Uni-Assist, the VPD is automatically generated and sent to the university as part of the standard process—you do not need to request it separately. However, you can also apply for a “VPD-only” evaluation (costs €75) without applying to a specific university. This is useful if you want your credentials evaluated early and then use the VPD across multiple applications. Some direct-application universities also accept VPD as a supplement to your application, which can speed up their internal review because the credential evaluation is already done. A VPD is typically valid for one academic year. If you are applying to a mix of Uni-Assist and direct-application universities, getting a VPD early can be a smart strategic move.

7. Can I track my Uni-Assist application status?

Yes, you can track your Uni-Assist application status in real-time through the my.uni-assist.de portal, where status updates show Document Receipt, In Review, and Completed stages.

After logging into your Uni-Assist account at my.uni-assist.de, you can see the current status of each application. The typical status progression is: “Application Submitted” (online form completed), “Documents Received” (hard copies received at Berlin office), “In Review” (your credentials are being evaluated), and “Completed” (VPD issued and sent to university). You also receive email notifications at key stages. However, the tracking system does not show detailed progress within the “In Review” stage, so you will not know exactly where in the evaluation queue your application sits. If your application has been in “In Review” for more than 6 weeks, you can contact Uni-Assist via email at info@uni-assist.de. Be patient with their response time, which is typically 5-10 business days. We recommend checking the portal once daily and keeping your email notifications active (including checking spam filters). Once the status shows “Completed,” your VPD has been sent to the university, and you should then monitor the university’s own portal for the admission decision.
